dSul

d, for design, and Sul, for south

dSul is an architectural practice based in Madeira, Portugal (PT) Our work ranges from large to small projects. We focus mostly on domestic architecture and interior design. We are interested in dealing with heritage, working with local material, essentially feeling space. We seek every solution in each new approach.

dSul is a practice that combines architecture with construction, meaning design-build. Design–build is a project delivery system used in the construction industry. It is a method to deliver a project in which the design and construction services are contracted by a single entity known as the design–builder or design–build contractor. Design–build relies on a single point of responsibility contract and is used to minimize risks for the project owner and to reduce the delivery schedule by overlapping the design phase and construction phase of a project. Design–build with its single point responsibility carries the clearest contractual remedies for the clients because the contractor will be responsible for all of the work on the project, regardless of the nature of the fault. The traditional approach for construction projects consists of the appointment of a designer on one side, and the appointment of a contractor on the other side. The design–build procurement route changes the traditional sequence of work. It answers the client’s wishes for a single point of responsibility in an attempt to reduce risks and overall costs. It is now commonly used in many countries and forms of contracts are widely available.

dSul also offers a range of opportunities for investments. Madeira, voted the best Island Destination in Europe this year, was elected “World’s Leading Island Destination” in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 by the World Travel Awards. It’s well known for its subtropical climate, luxuriant scenery, great gastronomy and above all, its security. It is, without doubt, a great place to live. Therefore, dSul provides professional advice on a wide variety of private investments. We offer information, human resources and legal guidance on all investments from building, to selling and to renting properties.

Our primary purpose as a consulting firm is to provide access to specific information, making the difference.

BIOGRAPHY

Luís Spranger Carvalho was born in South Africa in 1972. He obtained his degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra in 2001. Between 2001 and 2015 he collaborated in several projects, especially the collaboration with Arch. Paulo David, at the Centre of the Arts – Casa das Mudas, and more recently, in the new eco-housing of Lisbon (social housing in Benfica, Carnide and Lumiar) in co-authorship with the Architects Alexandre Dias and Bruno Silvestre. In 2016 he founded dSul, an architectural office that seeks to develop projects with a careful consideration of the place, centered on local techniques and materials, and essentially focused on the relationship between drawing and the construction, developing the concept of design-build
